What is the current situation?
The educational level in Siwa is one of the poorest in the country. There is a scarcity of good schools and qualified teachers leading for children to often miss out on entire terms on a subject. The absence of a university or other educational institutions obliges graduated students to travel more than 300 kms (to the bigger city of Marsa Matrouh) to complete their education. Girls are the first ones to drop out as they are not allowed to travel alone. Additionally, the pressure for early marriage, forms a mayor disadvantage.
What is the ideal?
Quality education should be available for everyone, and to offer this to the most vulnerable groups, additional work has to be done. Experienced teachers and modern teaching materials are essential for the development of children. They will learn to understand about themselves and the world around them, capacitating them for their future life to be creative and productive. Studies also show that education has a positive effect in reducing early age marriages and giving girls more possibilities to make their own choices.
What we will do?
Over the years, all our efforts have been focused on improving education in the oasis. It started off offering literacy, English and computer courses with recognized international certification for adults. By time, we developed the vision of focusing on the most vulnerable groups of society: women and children. Since 2018, our program Five Stars Kindergarten has offered Montessori-based education to around 300 children. At the same time, we continuously train women and girls to improve their kindergarten teaching skills. Our “new” (Montessori based) teaching methods are introducing a more friendly way of learning, stimulating the creative development of children. In this program we want to continue expanding our quality and impact.
